    Where to find sail tails

Thanks Gary. I hadn't heard that, but then again, I've not had my ear to the rail for awhile. Was it in the NBRSA magazine?

What's causing donut ring in case

I just haven't found that to be the case (no pun intended). The bulge there doesn't get completely "pushed" to the outside. It can't unless the medium is non-solid. You can't force that solid material completely to the other side of the center line without some of it coming back. Take an...

What's causing donut ring in case

I have been doing this method for several years. I think it's still my favorite. But as you said, the donut still eventually shows up. Really, truly, the only way I've found to get rid of the donut is inside neck reaming and doing it several times. But even then, it's near impossible to get...

What's causing donut ring in case

Thanks for clearing that up Greg. I have tried that method and found I still got donuts eventually, though not as fast as some of the other methods.

    That's a BIG +1;)

    Are Machinists Skills Necessary?

Yep, I agree. I used to get barrels that I felt were competitive up to 2000 rounds. Even won some wood with one that was fried inside out according to the borescope. But I haven't had one like that post '09. The last few I've had seem to go right down the swirler bowl at about 500. Sure...

    Are Machinists Skills Necessary?

Holy smokes! I knew these guys were getting serious quantities ordered, but I couldn't even fathom ordering 30 barrels. Just chambering that many would be a full time job for quite some time! When I had a chat with Tony Boyer a couple years ago, he said that he was "trying lots of barrels"...

    Are Machinists Skills Necessary?

Well that would all depend on if he's a rich guy or a poor guy Dave!;) A rich guy probably wouldn't be concerned about it....

Central Utah Benchrest is Holding Group Match May 2nd & 3rd

How right you are Marty. I will hopefully have everything under control and be ready to shoot the August match. It will be fun to see how rusty I am after a 12 month hiatus!

What's causing donut ring in case

Greg, Are you turning twice to accomplish this? Once before fireforming and once after? Or do you have a dedicated fireforming barrel with a .273" neck or something along that size?

    Are Machinists Skills Necessary?

That's where the time and money come in. Yeah, you can still find decent barrels these days. Only thing is you have to buy half a dozen to get one now. How do you know if you got a good one? Well, that's where time comes in.......you have to spend more money to put more rounds down more...

What's causing donut ring in case

The simple answer is: Your brass is thicker the farther down from the mouth you go. Neck turning only gets rid of some of the fatter stuff from the outside of the neck, and the shoulder material eventually ends up working its way forward, thus giving you a donut. We also don't help matters...

How high off the ground to reduce mirage significantly?

Not sure you can get high enough to ever completely eliminate it. What causes mirage is also what causes turbulence in airplane flight at 35,000 feet. Shooting long distance over 1000 foot deep canyons causes as much mirage as sandy, 100 yard rifle ranges do. I'm afraid as long as there is...

    Are Machinists Skills Necessary?

Having a lathe and knowing how to use it is certainly helpful in this game. It would save you money and wait time, and allow you to do things your way. However, I don't think it's a competitive advantage as much as a convenience advantage. The second thing you mentioned, having a personal...

I'm glad you had fun Marty. It was fun chatting with you again. Were you able to get all that wood into the back of your truck?

Central Utah Benchrest is Holding Group Match May 2nd & 3rd

Tricky conditions today with thunder bumpers rolling through. Dave Woodward found the tune again and won the UL200 and the UL Grand. Rodney Brown shot steady all weekend and took home the 2 gun. Congratulations!
