    HEAVY heavy sand??

Heavy Range Sand Might be the sand coming out of our ranges after a changes out. It is sifted before loading onto the trucks to get any large projectile pieces out, but there is enough powdered lead in it that the outgoing trucks can only carry half the amount that they deliver in. Each test...

    bonding/gluing aluminum

Marine-Tex grey has worked well for me. It was designed for boat repairs. Besides using it for bedding rifles, I have fixed aluminum fuel tanks and outboard lower units with it.

    Longthorne Gunmakers

As an apprentice Toolmaker I had to make a pair of V-blocks that matched all with hand tools. The USMC 2112 Gunsmith school at Quantico makes you file a 1.00" cube, depending on your attitude you might get a piece of 4140PH or 12L14.

    Will my 50BMG blow up?

I was at that plant in 2008 looking at the problem. So brass produced before then up to around 2010 for the US Gov, stamped PMJ. They might have continued the process for civilian sales. It will only give problems with cycling in automatic weapon systems. We had no issues with sticking in...

    Will my 50BMG blow up?

Bolt thrust in M2 We had many M2 machinegun barrel extensions break due to excessive bolt thrust. This was caused by soldiers lubing the ammo before firing. The brass was sticking in the chambers because it was softer than standard design. Some solider had the idea of lubing the ammo to stop...

    bullet stability question

The Greenhill formula was originally developed around lead core flat base round nose bullets for big game. It will give odd results with boat tails, spire points and all copper bullets.

For the car guys among us

If all else fails, use a hammer. If that doesn't work use a bigger one. If you cant fix it with a hammer, you must have an electrical problem.

    inletting a stock

You can use a router with a guide rail to cleanup the straight edges. Clamp stock between two pieces of plywood to give you a straight reference surface for the top, and then run the guide rail along one of outside edges. You could even do most of the inletting with a router.

    inletting a stock

Side milling is not recommended on a drill press as most chucks are held on with a taper and the side forces can cause them to loosen. Now you could use a drill press to remove the majority of the materiel by boring a series of overlapping holes, possibly with an end mill or Forstner bit. If you...

    Spider in steady fingers question..

I have the drawings for the bearing fitted steady rest design. I got them from Speedy when he was at TSJC. I built one to fit on my lathe that has a .750" spindle hole. I can send them or try posting them here.

    bushed primer pockets??

Flash tubes If you are trying to bush the primer pockets, how about trying to put flash tubes in and ignite the powder up front. Elmer Keith wrote about this back in the 1930's and worked with it for .50BMG at Salt Lake Arsenal during WW2. The idea was to get higher velocities with less chamber...

    12L14 Holee Kowww

I was at a machine tool trade show many years ago and found that the exhibiters were using 12L14 for there demo material. Made the machines look like the fastest cutting things out there.

    Tapered tenons?

We were doing the acceptance testing on the.300WM M2010 rebuilds here for a while and the requirement was for 2MOA 10 shot groups at 300 meters. Not very good, my shop reworked some of the failed guns and got them into the 1.5MOA range using the supplied barrels. The barrels were Remington...

    hybrid cases

If you read Elmer Keith's Gun Notes. He and a few others experimented with that method, "flash tube", of modifying cases back in the 30's. The US Government looked into it during WW2 as a method of getting higher velocities with reduced pressures in the .50BMG round. Elmer used it in his .338OKH...

    hybrid cases

Yes, we have been testing them for years. We have had trouble with the high pressure loads. Just because the case is theoretically rated for 80,000psi, doesn't mean that the weapon system will handle it. We have had blown cases in Universal Receivers and locked up M700 actions with bolt face...

What tool / cutter setup do you use to turn rifle barrel shanks?

I was taught to keep a can of water next to the grinder. Start grinding by dipping the tool blank in the water, watch the water beads while grinding, when they start sizzling away redunk. Doing it this way the cutter blank will always stay around 212*. Most people wait till they see a color...

What tool / cutter setup do you use to turn rifle barrel shanks?

Heat treating HSS blanks Having started out as a toolmakers apprentice almost 60 years ago and still working as a Toolmaker/Gunsmith, I have never seen it done or had to do it myself. Just grind to shape and hone the edge. If that is to difficult just buy the A. R. Warner HSS inserts.

Barrel Flush Systems - muzzle attachment

I have seen some using a quick connect air hose coupling for the rotating joint. At the slow RPM's of chambering they should be fine.
