Bullet choice strictly for 100 yards score matches.

Up here in the NW we recently held a Varmint for Score match, and had some of the best conditions to shoot in I have ever experienced. Of the 15 shooterers, only 4 shot a 30BR. With one exception all the rest were firing a 6mm. There were 8 250's at 100 yds, and 4 250s at 200yds, and 3 500's in...

Firing Pin Spring for Nesika Action?

I think springs for a 700 Rem will work in a Nesika action. I have a model J and a spring for a Mod. 7 (or a 600) worked perfect in it. Check to see which R700 action lines up with your action, bolt length for bolt length. FWIW Steve Kostanich

    How's lilja these days?

Regardless of what brand barrel you get, build the rifle to fit into a specific NBRSA short range class. A 1.25 straight barrel is not legal in any of the varmint class rifles. Get a max heavy varmint contour if you go 30 BR, a light varmint contour if you go 6mm. You will be glad you did if you...

Who did these modifications on a Leupold?

If I remember right, back in the mid "60's when the NBRSA ( I think) was developing the 3 varmint classes, the Sporter was an "almost" Hunter class rifle. 6mm for larger on the bone, magazine fed action, and 16x power scope limit. Can't remember what the stock configuration was. I was not yet...

    Shilen triggers

Actually the configuration of the Shilen trigger is exactly what many BR 'smiths did to the original Rem 700 triggers before Jewel, and now the good foreign triggers came along. I did many of them back in the early '90's, and they worked pretty well. If you can get your hands on a copy of...

    Loads for 222 Remington

I agree with 1911 nut on using 133. You might also try 4895 again, that is what Mike Walker, designer of the 222, recommended years ago. Stuff as much in as you can, it is really too slow for a 222, but gives very good accuracy, but not as high velocity as a 222 is capable of. Most 222 BR rifles...

    Chamber reamer

A Little Reamer History Most BR shooters today have never heard of Elliot reamers. They were made by Red Elliot in Ramona, CA. His tools were the standard, and were available 'till the early "70's. Elliot made reamers 'till he was near 90. Then Kieth Francsis started making reamers, I think...

Proposed new gun laws in Washington State

If you live in Washington you need to be aware that HB 2118 is an effort by the liberal representatives in the House to put as many FFLs out of business as possible. It makes FFL operations so impossible to meet the requirements of the bill they would simply go out of business. It is estimated...

Who did these modifications on a Leupold?

I have not shot HBR for many years, and probably should get back into it, but there're no matches reasonably close. I have two rifles that should be rebarrelled in 30 BR , and 2 Mini Burris scopes, 2 Weaver KT-6's and 2 of the old Lyman AO 6x. The Lymans have great glass, but the adjustments...

    Barrel inspection

This device will generate what Pat McMillan said to Manley Oakley, when Manley built a device to check rifling pitch accuracy,"Manley, what are trying to do put the barrel makers out of business?" This was back in the mid '70's! By the way Lilja barrels now has Manley's device, he gave it. to...

    Some Sniper King history

Sniper King History The Sniper King trophy was created in 1944, and is the oldest trophy in Benchrest shooting. It is awarded for firing the smallest 10 shot group at 200 yards. In the very early years it may have been some what different, but for the last 50 years it had been 10 shots at 200...

    Left the range

More memories Norm always looked out for myself and Del Bishop or Larry Boers when we came to a shoot in Visalia. Saved us a loading table, frequently made a lunch for us, or guided us to a good restaurant for Saturday night dinner. When Del passed in 2011 Norm drove all the way up from Cal...

34 pounds of 1960 Benchrest Rifle

Nut, Butch and any I also have a model 37 that I bought brand new in 1957. ( I was 15 years old) Came with Redfirld Olympic sights and cost a whopping $114.00! paid for with my paper route earnings. About all that is M37 now is the action. It has a McMillan barrel, Kenyon trigger, thumb hole...

34 pounds of 1960 Benchrest Rifle

Nut, Thanks for the kudos. I've actually be lucky enough to win the Sniper King six times in '16, '17, '18, and '19 plus the two shown on the roster of winners. I alway considered the winning groups as freaks, 'cause you rarely shoot an agg. composed of all groups as small as it takes to win...

34 pounds of 1960 Benchrest Rifle

I agree with 1911Nut's post on possible Northwest origin. Back in the 60's there was a Dr. Rod Janson that shot with the Puget Sound BR Club. I never met him, but heard of him when I started in 1969 with PSBRC. The rifle could have been his. There are no Ole Timers left here in the NW area who...
