Just bought my first thumbhole stock for a Remington 700 heavy barreled action. The stock is a used custom laminated Richards Micro with a flat bottom. I got it on Ebay. I normally don't like thumbhole stocks and have never before owned one. But I got a good deal on it and couldn't resist its good looks. I intend to use it for precision paper punching with my Hart rest.

Do any of you guys actually shoot your thumbhole stocks via just gripping it around the pistol grip and just holding it like any other regular stock? It will be awhile before I can get the action and trigger into it, but it seems like I might be able to do just that. I would be a bit enlightened to hear from you that I might be able to actually grip it comfortably and shoot it accurately in such a manner that it wasn't designed for.

Ok guys....I checked the Richards Micro Stock websight and saw that my particulr stock was designed to be a dual grip.

Upon examining photos of Boyd's/Remington 700 stocks, it doesn't look like you can properly grip that stock other then using the thumbhole grip.

So.....no I wasn't being creative or silly. This Micro stock I bought seems to allow the shooter to hold it on the outside and not just through the thumbhole.

Shoot FREE RECOIL and you won't have to grip it at all. ;) Walk down the line at a registered BENCHREST match and count how many thumbhole stocks you see.

The only benefit I have ever found with a thumb hole stock, is the ability to better handle recoil, it is straight line no drop, makes for better handling for a big boomer rifle. They do swing good on running game shots. After that, it's all down hill from there.

A little bit hit at the Palmer airport, but that was about it. Anchorage got some. Some other parts of the mat-su got ash..
