What is the opinion here of rechambering a 1-9 twist 223 to 22-250? Is that twist too fast for a 22-250?

Need a new Bolt face. Save the 223 and go out and buy a 22-250 AI.

Nope... The 60 - 70gr bullets will be at their best. Should get 3400fps from a 69MK (I get 3340 fps with 69gr Sierras from my PacNor 1-8" 22BR 25" barrel) and they'll tumble yotes BIG TIME! Shoots bug holes!!!:)

Have you considered a High end custom..?
There are delays but I know Chris can get a Super Stainless Match Savage pre chambered barrel to your Exact specs inside of 10 weeks.
Once you shoot a custom tube you won't look back!!!;):)

They are correct. You'll need a new bolt face. As far as twist rate, it just depends on what bullets you want to shoot. If you want 40 gr bullets at lightning fast velocities, you're going to blow up bullets.

Dogman: I would never do it.
Salvage that 223 somehow (you don't say what your goal is OR your dissatisfaction might be with the 223) and add a 22-250 to your arsenal - or just outright sell it and put that money towards a new (fresh!) 22-250.
The re-chambering, re-magazining, re-followering, re-bolt facing and re-extractoring of the 223 would be to much of a hassle and to much expense.
Best of luck.

Sell your rifle and buy another one. To change your Savage over, you'll need a bolt-head, either a barrel or chamber job, a new follower and a new magazine spring. The only way I'd go to the trouble is if I wanted a custom barrel either way. You could send it to SSS and they could build a nice rifle from your action.

Dogman,
This really ain't no big deal. No, don't sell your rifle and no, for damn sure don't have SSS build you a rifle. We're talking p-dogs for pete's sake.

A large bolt face, last time I got one, was arounf $35. To get the right one, you might send your bolt to Kevin Rayhill and have him choose the right one.
You can either buy a take off 22-250 barrel from him or Northland Shooter Supply or maybe post an ad that you're looking for one. Do it here, on the GoGoVarmintGo Board and maybe SavageShooters.com. You should get one for less than the price of a new chamber and you'll have two barrels instead of one. You WILL want to change back to that 223 now and then.

You will have both for under $200 additional expense and you'll have the expertise to do the swap as often as you like. I carry two Savage actions and at least, 6 barrels everytime I go to SD and I use every one. It takes 15-20 minutes to do the whole swap including the bolt face.

The instructions for the swap are on the GoGo Board and on the SavageShooters site.

Go for it, it's a good plan.

with it being a savage, buy a new bolt head, and screw a new barrel on it.

I agree w/ Geyfox's response, I shoot a 1-8 twist standard 22-250... it's a Rem. 600 in a BR stock... It shoots bullets from 55 grains to 80 grains very well. The bolt swap on the Savages is easy, as is barrel removal & replacement... My next rifle will be a Savage for just the (versatility). Sam

No sense rechambering a Savage tube. Simply buy a new one and screw it on.

New takeoff varmint contour factory tubes cost $185 I think from Northlander.
Custom hand lapped prefit tubes run around $ 249 and up. Can be ordered through Northlander or personally.
He has some ordered from McGowen and Shilen at this time. Best jump in and see if you can get one in 22-250 before they're spoken for.

You will need a new bolt head. I've never heard of them being individually fitted at the factory so I see no sense in doing it now. I've bought a couple from Midway and never had an issue.
The floating bolt head is supposed to eliminate fitting issues. Could be I'm wrong.

I suggest the custom tube. The time you spend waiting for it will be saved in the time you spend cleaning it. Should shoot much tighter too.

How about a complete rifle. I have two in very good shape I bought for the actions but would sell either one. ADL in 22-250, $400, BDL in 22-250, heavy barrel, $495. Add shipping and insurance and FFL

How about going to a 223AI? I have one of these on a Savage action and it is just fantastic. I use IMI brass, Rem 7 1/2 primers, H4198, 40 grain VMax and run it at 4100fps.

This does create some drama on a prairie dog!

Dogman, Any reason to rebarrel, rechamber or buy a new rifle is a good one. To look at your situation from the outside. You with the 223 and your buddy with the 22-250 can shoot the same bullets. It's like your buddy has a 100yd head start on you. What his bullet will do at 500yd yours will do at 400. When you get out that far the bullets from either rifle are loafing along in the low 2000s fps. Another thing to think about, you can see his hits better than yours. A good solid hit from either rifle should give you the desired results. Kenny

I would also go to 223 improved(AI) this will shoot 50gr bulets to 3700 and 75 amax to 3000+. this will use less powder than 22-250 and you will get longer barrel life.

IF you buy this barrel and install it on your current rifle you still won't be able to shoot 22-250 YOUR BOLT HEAD IS THE WRONG SIZE!!!!
YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET THE BOLT HEAD AROUND THE CASE HEAD AND SHOOT!!!

It costs me $ 110 to have my 223 savage with factory barrel converted to 223Improved. The gunsmith cut off .050 and went in with the reamer. It shoots under 3/8 inch groups with 50gr up to 75gr bullets.Shoot with max load for 223 and brass will be fire formed.
