View Full Version : 95gr Berger VLD at 3300 FPS ?

I'm shooting a 26" BBL 6x284 10" twist. ( Short action Remington 700 Sendaro)I'm reading that VLD bullets don't like much speed past 3200. Yesterday shooting 53.3 grs of Re#22 produced 3275 FPS and 1/2MOA at 100 yards.( No pressure signs)Would I be wasting bullets and powder to try and get 3,400 FPS ? Hoping to make this my 500 yard PD and Coyote load.

nope, go for it.

Haven't you heard.... speed kills...

Who cares if the ballistics programs show an almost almost negligible difference in a couple hundred fps. My 6AI (1 in 9) is always loaded as hotttt as possible... 88 Berger S bullets, 95 VLDs... fast is good and I haven't noticed any "magic numbers" on velocity... Barrels are cheap, life is short, my gunsmith has bills to pay...

Kindof like my Dad with his 220 swift - "If I'd wanted to shoot slower bullets, and save barrel life, I'd shoot a .222"

Have fun, be safe, watch the pressure tell tales.

In the 6.5 - 284 I have had very good velocity with the Berger Non VDL bullets using N-165.

The VV powders seem to produce better velocity with less heat to the barrel.

Had some other poster suggest V-V550? Is that a hot burning powder?

VV N550 is similar to N-150 but is a more dense powder. You can get more into a case.

N550 likes high pressure. It does not burn clean with light loads.

I've got the same thing, 6-284, 27" 10 twist, 95 VLD's.

Mine run right at 3600 and half MOA. with a healthy dose of 7828.

Not a warm weather load, though.

I predict it's impossible to blow up 95s from a 10tw. NoWay

My friend shoots 7828 through his 22-284 using 69 gr. pills. Loves this powder. I shoot a 6-284, 30" 1:8.5 twist K&P tube, 107 SMK, 54.0 H-1000. How have the 87 gr. V-MAX's been working? Any powder recommendations with this powder? 7828?

I have done a far amount of testing with the 95 VLD in my 6mm AI with a 1:9 twist. I am really surprised they stabilize in your 1:10. Wouldn't in my buddy's 243. Anyway, I get the optimum accuracy at 3250 fps, but it doesn't open up that much at 3400 fps and the wind effect is minimized. RE-22 and IMR-4895 are my 2 powders of choice, but I just started playing with IMR 4007SSC. I looks impressive with only one ladder shot.

In short, go for it. tiny

Those 95gr Berger VLDs in my 10" twist 6x284 won't stabilize . That 1/2" group was only one group and it must of been a fluke . Most of the target groups looked like small shot gun patterns. I was trying to tell my self "Oh its just a windy day,or Hmm maybe my Barrel has had it" But today shooting 70gr Nosler BT I was getting multiple 1/2" groups. So the remaining 95gr bullets are in the back of the bullet drawer waiting for my next BBL.:)
